The idea of utilitarianism seeks to delineate what action is moral and what is not, by considering usefulness of a particular action. Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that says that the right thing to do in any situation is whatever will “do the most good” (that is, whatever will produce the best outcomes) taking into consideration the interests of all concerned parties. The Utilitarian theory of the justification of punishment stands in opposition to the “retributive” theory, according to which punishment is intended to make the criminal “pay” for his crime. Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that defends that we should act in ways that bring about as much happiness as possible in the world.
